The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world. The majority of used textiles are immediately landfilled, and those diverted still often end up in international waste streams as a result of subpar textile sorting and grading processes. Economic and environmental opportunities to change the current system have been consistently overlooked. Although novel upcycling solutions already exist and we have the expertise to grade more accurately, high labor costs and technological challenges prevent effective diversion. This causes annual losses of up to $7B in Canada alone.
