Biography

Joseph Orozco

Joseph Orozco is the Executive Director, Entrepreneurship; Founder of The Entrepreneurship Hatchery and an Instructor of Entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, University of Toronto.

Joseph brings over three decades of experience as a practitioner-educator, founder entrepreneur, operator and angel investor with a unique ability to grasp technologies and connect on a human level for profitable improvement.

During his current pedagogical journey, he developed the FEEL TM methodology for entrepreneurial human capital and venture formation, which is utilized in undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship courses. This methodology forms the core framework for business definition used by the start-ups hosted at The Entrepreneurship Hatchery. As of January 2024, the Hatchery has accepted over 450 new ventures into its programs and launched more than 120 start-up companies, which have already created more than 600 new jobs.

As a serial founder, he began his entrepreneurial journey during his university days, with start-ups manufacturing metal frames for stoneware and sports equipment. Following a nine-year tenure at the Dow Chemical Company, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to stablish and lead several ventures: Telequote, which was ultimately sold to Reuters after a 14 year run; Latamtrade and POP, agnostic trading platforms for brokerage firms; and Simeon International, which provided sound field amplification systems for classrooms. He also served as an investor and collaborator at Medipattern Corporation until 2010, in the business of ultrasound breast cancer screening.

As a contributor to the community from 2015 and 2020, his initiative, ideas2Hatch (i2H), brought the experience and learnings of The Entrepreneurship Hatchery to high school students through a partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

Joseph received training in M&A at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; completed the S&ME Board of Directors Effectiveness Program at Rotman, University of Toronto; underwent Lean Launch Pad Educators Teaching training at Stanford University; holds a Masters in Marketing; and earned a degree in Industrial Engineering from Javeriana University.

His first venture was launched while he was still attending university, manufacturing metal frames for stoneware. Next, he landed a role in sales and business development at the Dow Chemical Company. This led him to found and lead several companies, including C.R., a logistics company on contract with Dow; Telequote, which was ultimately sold to Reuters; Latam trade, an agnostic trading platform for the Latin American community and ‘POP’ system for brokerage firms; and Simeon International, a Canadian company providing soundfield amplification systems for the classroom. Angel investor in Medipattern Corporation until 2010.

Orozco earned his Bachelor of Industrial Engineering (Laureate Thesis Award) from Javeriana University , and his Masters in Marketing from Andes University. Orozco has also studied at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in its Mergers and Acquisitions Executive Program; at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, where he completed its Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) Board Effectiveness Program and at Stanford’s Lean Launch Pad Educators Teaching training.
