Hatchery Circle Panel #2: Building A Business

Building a Business: Where to Start?

This panel addresses the realities of bringing a start-up from idea to fruition as a sustainable, self-sufficient company.  Panelists will highlight the things that start-up founders should keep in mind, while putting their business plan together.  The conversation will draw on strategies such as the Business Model Generation Canvas but are not limited to it.

The goal is for attendees to gain insight on the relationship between the business model and the execution process (it’s important to recognize that the two are related but not synonymous).

Panelists will cover a range of topics that will touch on:

  • Ideation and validation—the groundwork in identifying problem and solution
  • Value Proposition—the volatility behind it, writing it down does not mean it’s set in stone
  • Technical difficulties—the different considerations that should be accounted for (a.k.a. things don’t go according to plan!)
  • Managing relationships—the challenges of managing professional working relationships with co-founders and mentors
  • Making hard decisions—reflecting on the health of a project and how it’s okay to cut your losses

Attendees are encouraged to think about questions they may have in the light of pursuing a start up and bring up the ones that stand out as particularly challenging or intimidating in the context of starting out as a young entrepreneur–who also happens to be a young woman.

Although this event is geared towards “advance women in entrepreneurship,” we believe that this can only be achieved through an inclusive approach.  This means that men are more than welcome to attend, bearing in mind that some topics of discussion will be addressing issues faced by women.  It will be interesting to have a range of perspectives at the table.

Panelists:

Susan Mey, Green Cricket Inc.

Huda Idrees, WealthSimple Financial Inc.

June Li, ClickInsight Corporation

Anna Janes, Cocomira Confections Inc.

Inmar Givoni, Kobo Inc.

Come on out for some good conversation to end your term!  Food and refreshments will be provided.
