Hatchery Circle Panel #3: Talking Confidence

Talking Confidence: Leaning In

“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”

— Sheryl Sandberg, Lean In: Women, Work and The Will to Lead

This panel will address the confidence gap faced by women in the field of tech-entrepreneurship and business.  What is the confidence gap?  Why does it occur?  What can be done in order to narrow it?

Panelists will talk about their personal experience with confidence and the strategies they used to combat negativity in a professional setting.  As entrepreneurship is heavily reliant on collaboration between people from different backgrounds, being confident without being perceived as abrasive makes a difference.  However, women face the double standard where being outspoken gets misconstrued as “hysteria” while male counterparts who come off combative may be labelled “go getters.”  This panel seeks to start valuable conversation that will get under these issues and hopefully bring some solutions to light.

Panelists will touch on:

  1. The double standard in the industry (myth or reality?)
  2. How to navigate disagreements professionally
  3. Dealing with “impostor syndrome”

Attendees are encouraged to reflect on their personal experience with confidence–be it in a classroom, professional or casual environment.  These reflections can be a starting point to bringing up specific issues for discussion.

Particularly within the context of entrepreneurship and The Hatchery:  perhaps it is slightly intimidating to attend and contribute to an Idea Market where other students are “pitching” their ideas; perhaps peers who are interested in startups seem to be talking in a different lingo;  perhaps someone disregards or dismisses your opinion disrespectfully.

These are examples of potential questions to raise in this conversation.

Panelists:

Lally Rementilla, The Gal’s Got Game

Hanna Janossy, Syncadian Inc.

Nika Stelman, Karp Resources

Isi Caulder, Bereskin & Par
