Sustain Hydro

Freight transportation contributes to 10.5% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions, where diesel-engine heavy-duty trucks are the primary contributors and limited alternative energy technologies are suitable to replace diesel. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are one possible solution. However, hydrogen infrastructure is limited in most countries. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can use various fuels such as methane while generating much lower emissions compared to combustion. One challenge for the use of hydrocarbon fuels is carbon deposition on functional layers, which degrades the cell performance. SustainHydro is aiming to develop SOFCs with carbon resistant anode (Ni3Sn) with low cost and high durability.
