Urethral catheterization is a routine medical procedure. Unfortunately, up to 1% of patients will experience urethral trauma during the insertion process, resulting in morbidity such as penile pain, urethral bleeding, urinary tract infection, and/or urethral strictures. This occurs due to premature insufflation of the balloon designed to keep the catheter in the bladder, or due to the use of excessive force during insertion. Our proposed re-design of the urethral catheter will decrease the risk of urethral injuries due to operator error, leading to improved patient outcomes, improved user satisfaction, decreased costs for the hospital, and decreased patient safety events.
